Roy Charles Kilmer
Roy was the youngest child in his family, joining his half-sister Evelyn Irene "Evy" Kilmer and his brother Russell Erwin "Fuzz" Kilmer. In 1936, his parents purchased the 80-acre Peterson farm on Lemon Hill, just west of Wonewoc on County Highway FF. Here he grew into adulthood attending St. Paul's Lutheran School, and later Wonewoc High School. The farm had no electricity or running water, and was badly eroded from the hard times of the Depression, drought of the dust bowl, and poor farming practices. His father quickly followed the soil conservation ideas of the 1930s and started contour farming, which helped prevent the severe erosion of the steep farmland. Roy helped cut logs by hand with crosscut saws for the addition onto the barn. They hauled stones from the woods to build the barn's foundation and split wood shakes for the shingles. They farmed with horses until they were able to buy a Case tractor in 1949. As his father's health began to decline, Roy took on the responsibilities of the farm at the age of 10, working alongside the men as an equal. He later entered the US Army after finishing high school and spent one and a half years in Ft. Lewis, Washington, Ft. Monroe, Virginia, and Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. After his discharge from the army, he attended GI school in Mauston to study agriculture. He met Mary Catherine Shaker at one of the many dances held in Wonewoc. There were three very busy dance halls at this time in Wonewoc, and quite a few romances started at these dances. Roy stated: “She had a sparkle in her eye," and he thought she was one of the prettiest girls at the dance. They were married at St. Theresa's Church in Union Center on Feb 28, 1949 and then bought the Kilmer family farm. His parents retired from farming and moved to the Village of Wonewoc. Roy worked many construction jobs to help pay for the farm. This included helping to build the Hillsboro Hospital, Wisconsin Dairies Plant in Union Center, and the Ray-O-Vac plant in Wonewoc. He also worked winters at the Ray-O-Vac plant in Wonewoc and started working as a mechanic at Art Talg's Chevrolet Garage in Wonewoc in 1955. He drove the school bus for three rural routes in Wonewoc, and drove the garage wrecker at night. He was often called out in the middle of the night to auto accidents all over the Western part of the state as he was on call for AAA. In 1965, he became a partner in Wildcat Implement in Hillsboro, and spent time purchasing farm machinery in many states and trucking it back to Hillsboro. He recalled many harrowing drives back with loads of machinery from Pennsylvania, wondering how he ever made it back in one piece. He became a mechanic at Badger Army Ammunition Plant, near Baraboo, and in 1968 became the substitute mail carrier for the rural routes in Wonewoc. Roy worked very hard to improve the farm and provide for his family, sometimes working for 48 hours straight without sleep. Mary and Roy after working hand in hand together on the farm, moved to Wonewoc in 1984. Roy always remained active on the farm until it was sold in 2004. In his retirement Roy was known for his beautiful red geraniums and marigolds at his Wonewoc home. Roy spent 19 years caring for his wife Mary after she suffered a severe stroke in 1991. Mary died on August 20, 2010. His love, compassion and care for Mary were amazing examples for everyone who knew them. They celebrated 61 years of marriage together and have raised seven children, and have many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Roy was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sisters Elizabeth Kilmer and Evelyn Kilmer Fick, his brother-in-laws: Conrad, Joseph "Pep", Anthony "Tony," Bernard, Daniel "Bob" Shaker, Dr John Mathews and William Fick, his sister in-laws June, Joyce, Bethel, Hazel, Mary Lou, and Helen Shaker and Peggy Mathews. James Eugene Thornsen
Jim developed his love of nature and strong work ethic in his youth helping on the family farm, particularly while his brothers served in the armed forces during World War II. In 1950, Jim married Joyce Schroeder at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Wonewoc, and they settled on Joyce’s family farm (the Ratzburg farm) in Plum Valley, Township of Woodland, Sauk County, where they raised their family of four children. The farmland was Jim’s heaven on earth. Although he toiled long hours in the fields under a hot sun and cared for the livestock, he never lost his deep and abiding love of the sights and sounds of the natural world; the sun and sky; the bees, squirrels, birds, and especially the deer. Soundly constructed, heated hunting/observation stands appeared in the woods; memories abound of fishing outings and bountiful gardens. He shared this love of the outdoors with the family, his own children and the cousins who treasured the times spent with Uncle Jim during the long summer days and nights. Trips to the creek at night; star-gazing, locating the Big Dipper, extended adult card games. As in his boxing years, Jim rarely lost a card game, but with his playful sense of humor and magnetic personality, a fun time was had by all. On occasion, his wonderful voice could be heard, singing along to his favorite artists. In the recent years, as his health declined, Jim retained his strength of character and continued to find refuge and tranquility in his outdoor life. Family care nurses, social workers, pastors and therapists visited and became like family. In January, Jim was admitted to St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo. Under the care of Dr. Thomas Flygt, he was transferred to UW Hospitals in Madison, where a bone marrow biopsy revealed that renal cancer cells had invaded his knee joint and the surrounding area. There was no treatment for the pain. Jim left his heaven on earth on February 20, 2011 at the Anderson Hospice Care Center in Madison, surrounded by the kind of love and care he deserved. Jim is survived by his wife Joyce; four children, Cheryl (Paul) Schwarzenbart, Jim Thornsen (Joyce Mueller), Conrad Thornsen and Geneva Thornsen; eight grandchildren, who also spent time with grandpa at the farm; one great grandchild; his sister, Shirley Erickson, and many close friends and family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Otis, Ovie and Castin. An inspiring funeral service was conducted on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Wonewoc, with Pastors Peter Snyder and Carl Schroeder officiating. He was laid to rest in the St. Paul’s Cemetery in Wonewoc, with the assistance of Thompson Funeral Home.

George J. Doering George J. Doering, age 78, of LaValle, Wisconsin, passed away on June 8, 2010. He spent his last day in this world surrounded with family and friends, sharing love and support. There is great joy in knowing that he is at peace and will never again deal with physical pain or loss. His 78 years were well spent building a family, friendships and caring about others. He was always full of love. Born the eighth child to Thelma Doering (Petersen), George enjoyed growing up on a farm and he truly loved and respected his mother. He had many beautiful memories that also included his four brothers—Joe, Jerry, Don and Robert; and his three sisters—Reefa, Helaine, and Mary Ann. George loved visiting and would share fond memories of growing up on the farm, riding the workhorses, coon hunting, Mother’s wonderful cooking, and swimming in the creek. There were plenty of pranks and tales that included their neighbors, the Rabucks. He grew up in a time where money was tight, but love and hard work were plentiful. The lessons learned as a child carried with him throughout his 78 years and he touched many hearts and lives. He had a delightful sense of humor and wasn’t afraid to share it! One of the greatest challenges for George, was the grief he carried for loved ones he lost. He was predeceased by his mother, Thelma Doering (Petersen); brothers, Jerry Doering and Joe Doering; and sisters, Helaine Rabuck (Harold); Mary Ann Wollin (Gus), and Reefa Clark (Homer). In October 2009 he lost his true love, Brenda Meinen. They always lived on in his heart and he enjoyed many wonderful memories of each and every one of them. He also never stopped missing them. He started his education in a one-room school, Litz School, that was about a mile from his home. He graduated from Wonewoc High School in 1950. George enjoyed learning and he became a very successful business owner simply by using his people skills and business sense. George started his work life working in Creameries – first in LaValle, then Mauston, and he later was the Butter Maker and Plant Manager in Clifton and worked there for a number of years. He also owned a farm in LaValle where he raised beef cattle and strawberries, later on converting to a dairy operation. The last 35 years of his life, he was a bar owner. He truly loved this business where he had the opportunity to be surrounded by friends and be a friend every day. The first bar he owned was Clifton Corners. He later purchased Where It’s At between Wonewoc and Union Center; and for the last 28 years or so he owned the Last Chance Saloon in LaValle, where he brought his grandson, Travis Maki, into the business as a partner. George will be sadly missed by his remaining family. Lorene Doering and Sue Doering, held a very special place in his heart as the widow and daughter of his brother Joe. His brother, Robert Doering and his family, Pat, Alan, Betty, Ron, LuAnn, and Peggy, lived nearby for many years. His brother, Don Doering, lives in San Antonio, Texas, and the distance never separated him from George’s thoughts and love. George had three children with Rose Doering (Downing). His three children and their loved ones, Doug Doering (Toni Verwey); Dan Doering; and Denise Doering (Dave Stephens); all remained very close to George – both in proximity and loving relationships. George was the kind of father who was always there for his family and he was very deserving of the love and respect held for him. When he helped someone out, he’d simply say “that’s what families are for” and he lived that ideal. Children meant the world to George, and his grandchildren were no exception. Danelle Doering (Diana); Shawna Doering; Emily Lueck (Mark); Elizabeth Doering; Travis Maki (Jennifer) and Georgette Maki (Alex) all brought him great pride and joy. Family had no boundary lines for George and he openly loved and accepted Desirea Jacenko, Tyler Bender, and Makayla VanTreese, as great-grandchildren in his heart; he also knew and loved Joseph Lueck, great-grandson. Love and respect for others is what set George apart from many in today’s world. He loved with all he had to give and in return he had countless friends and family that he treasured. He would often say “friends for life.” He will live on in the hearts and thoughts of many. The celebration of George’s life will be as follows: Thompson Funeral Home: Wonewoc, Wisconsin Friday, June 11, 2010 – Visitation 4 pm – 8 pm Everyone is welcome to join family and friends at the Last Chance Saloon, LaValle, WI following the funeral service as we celebrate the life of George!
